Privacy policy for the Iceland app

What happens to your data in the Iceland by cheaptravel.cz app for iPhone.

Who runs the app

The Iceland by cheaptravel.cz app (Island by cheaptravel.cz in Czech and German) is run by Samec Digital s.r.o., company ID 29547539, Na Břehu 378, 387 11 Katovice, Czech Republic, registered in the Commercial Register kept by the Regional Court in České Budějovice, section C, file 36598. Contact: info@cheaptravel.cz.

In short

The app needs no account and contains no advertising or analytics tools. We don’t track you across apps or websites and we don’t use your device’s advertising identifier. Most of what you enter in the app stays on your phone.

What stays on your phone

Your trip plan, booked nights, questionnaire answers (who is travelling and what you have already arranged), favourite places and settings are stored on your phone. Settings stay there. If iCloud is on, the app also saves the plan, nights, answers and favourites to your iCloud so they reach your other devices. iCloud is run by Apple (Apple’s privacy policy) and we have no access to this data.

Location. The app asks for location permission only when you tap the locate button on the map. Your location is used only to move the map to where you are. We don’t send it anywhere or store it.

Our server and live data

Warnings, road conditions, wind, weather forecasts, northern lights, earthquakes and exchange rates come from our server in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The server gets them from Veðurstofa Íslands, Vegagerðin, NOAA, MET Norway and the European Central Bank, so your phone doesn’t connect to them. Weather forecasts are requested for a place in the guide, not for your location.

As with any internet connection, the server sees your IP address. The live data server doesn’t write individual requests to logs and doesn’t store your IP address, except for the fingerprint used for the AI described below. The offline map is downloaded from our map server, which keeps an ordinary web server log (IP address, time, device type). This log is used only to run and secure the service and is kept only as long as necessary. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the service securely under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Ask and Plan it for me (AI)

When you ask a question, the app sends our server the question, the extracts from the guide the answer should be based on, a short summary of warnings and road conditions, and the app language. For Plan it for me it sends the text of your request. The server passes this to Anthropic, PBC (USA), whose Claude model writes the answer (Anthropic’s privacy policy). Under its commercial terms, Anthropic does not train models on this data. The transfer to the USA relies on the Standard Contractual Clauses in the data processing addendum that forms part of those terms.

We don’t store questions or answers on our server. Emergency questions (accidents, injuries, evacuation) never reach the AI. The app offers the 112 emergency number instead.

For the daily limit the app creates a random installation number. It isn’t linked to your Apple ID, your name or your phone’s identifiers, and it disappears when you delete the app. The server counts how many questions you have asked today against this number and against a fingerprint of your IP address. The fingerprint is one-way, so your IP address can’t be recovered from it. Counts are kept for the current day only, older ones are deleted.

Please don’t include personal data, yours or anyone else’s, in your questions. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing the feature and protecting it from abuse under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. You don’t have to use the feature, the rest of the app works without it. Answers are written by a language model and may be incomplete. Always check safety information with the authorities.

Partner links

For accommodation, cars, tours, flights and eSIMs the app offers links to partners (for example Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com, DiscoverCars, Localrent, Viator, GetYourGuide, Guide to Iceland, Tiqets, Kiwi.com and Airalo). The link goes through our server, which adds our partner code and counts the click. Only the partner and the screen of the app are recorded, without the installation number or IP address. The link may contain the place and dates of your trip so the partner can prefill your search. Once the partner’s website opens, its own policy applies. If you book something with a partner, we may receive a commission.

Coffee, email and other links

The Buy us a coffee button opens the Buy Me a Coffee website. The payment is handled by that service under its own policy (Buy Me a Coffee privacy policy). We don’t receive payment details. We only see what you choose to enter there, such as a name or a message.

Contact and guide requests open in your email app. We only process what you write to us, and only to deal with your message. Navigation opens Apple Maps or Google Maps, and article sources open in your browser. Their own policies apply there.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct or erase your data, to restrict processing, to data portability and to object to processing. Write to us at info@cheaptravel.cz. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, in the Czech Republic the Office for Personal Data Protection (uoou.cz). As there are no accounts, we can’t tell which installation number is yours unless you send it to us. The quickest way to delete all app data is to uninstall the app.
